Baja East Cape Fly Fishing Report – Tuna, Marlin & Roosterfish | August 2026

We’re well into August here on the East Cape of Baja, and the summer weather is in full swing. The days are hot, the humidity is up, and we’ve been seeing some afternoon clouds and a little rain over the mountains. Most of the rain has stayed in the mountains so far, with not much making it into town.

For East Cape Baja fly fishing, the yellowfin tuna have been providing some of the best action this week. Fishing around Rincón has been good, and we’ve been chumming with sardines and getting tuna boiling right around the boat. When they get going like this, there are some great opportunities to put the fly in front of feeding fish.

Farther offshore, we’re also finding bigger yellowfin tuna around the porpoise schools. A lot of these fish are running 50 pounds and above, and some are getting a little too ambitious for the fly rod. For anglers using conventional tackle, these bigger tuna have also been hitting topwater baits and live bait.

Marlin and Sailfish

Billfish action has been fair, with blue marlin, sailfish and the occasional striped marlin mixed in. There are still good opportunities offshore, and this time of year you never know what you might run into during a day on the water.

Roosterfish Along the East Cape Beaches

Along the beaches, there are still a few roosterfish to be found, but right now you definitely have to hunt for them. They’ve been a little scarce this past week, so this isn’t a numbers game. It takes some patience, covering water and being ready when an opportunity presents itself. For anglers willing to put in the time, there are still roosterfish around and opportunities to take one from the beach on a fly.

Baja Weather Looking Good

Weather-wise, things are looking good for the coming week. There are no hurricanes on the horizon right now, and the forecast looks good. With plenty of warm water and good conditions, we expect the fishing to remain productive as we move through the second half of August.

Looking Ahead to Magdalena Bay

We’re also getting ready for our fall Magdalena Bay fishing season. We offer both offshore trips and mangrove trips, depending on the type of fishing you’re looking for.

Offshore, Magdalena Bay gives anglers opportunities for striped marlin, dorado, yellowfin tuna and wahoo, while our mangrove trips offer a completely different experience targeting species such as snook and snapper.

If you’re interested in joining us in Magdalena Bay this fall, contact us and we’ll be happy to help put together a trip that fits what you want to fish for and how you want to fish.

Crooked Island, Bahamas

We are also hosting a trip to Crooked Island in the Bahamas this January. Crooked Island offers some incredible saltwater fly-fishing opportunities, and we’re looking forward to getting back onto the flats.

If you’re interested in joining us, contact The Reel Baja and we’ll send you the dates, pricing and complete trip information.

Trade the Trout Rod for Baja

With warm water temperatures across much of the western United States causing some trout fisheries to slow down or close until cooler weather arrives this fall, this can be a great time to make the switch to saltwater.

If your home trout water is too warm to fish, Baja and the East Cape are a great alternative. Come down, grab an 8-, 10- or 12-weight and spend some time chasing roosterfish, tuna, dorado and billfish with us.
