Baja Fly Fishing Report: Dorado, Tuna, Roosterfish and Billfish Heating Up This Spring

The weather this past week in Baja has been about as good as you could ask for. Winds were down, seas were calm, and it made for some really nice conditions on the water. Morning temperatures were in the low 60s, with daytime highs getting up into the mid 80s.

The fishing has been solid, especially on the dorado front. They are not really schooled up yet, but on the calm mornings we’ve been seeing singles cruising and pushing water with their heads up. When we get a few sardines in front of them and get them boiling, it has given us some great chances to cast flies to them.

We’ve also had good tuna fishing, with some quality fish up to around 50 pounds. Most of those fish have been associated with porpoise and have been found offshore, generally in the 20- to 40-mile range. On top of that, we’ve been having fun with some big bonita as well. They’ve been a little closer in, and when we find them, they’ve been eating flies.

Inshore, we’ve been seeing roosters both right along the beach and just offshore. There is a lot of small bait around right now, and both the roosters and, every once in a while, dorado have been pushing it around and chasing it. That has made for some really fun sight-fishing opportunities.

We’re also starting to see some billfish, which is making the offshore action even more interesting.

It definitely feels like spring has started early, with warmer water showing up sooner than usual. People are already talking about a possible super El Niño this year, and if what we saw this week is any sign of what’s ahead, it could shape up to be a really great season.
