Baja Fly Fishing Report
We’ve got some weather to keep an eye on here in Baja as Hurricane Polo continues to move toward the peninsula.
At this point, it doesn’t look like Polo will have a major impact on us here in Los Barriles, although we could certainly see some heavy rain and wind. The bigger impact looks to be farther north around Magdalena Bay, so we’re hoping everyone in the Mag Bay area stays safe and gets through the storm without any major problems.
There is also a second hurricane developing behind Polo. Its current track appears to be a little farther toward the southern tip of the peninsula, potentially bringing it closer to the Los Barriles and Cabo San Lucas areas. It’s still too early to know exactly what it will do, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on it over the next several days.
We’ve already had a little rain this past week, with more expected to begin later tonight or tomorrow as moisture from the storm moves into the area. The forecast is calling for unsettled weather and additional moisture over the next three or four days. As always with these tropical systems, we’ll just have to wait and see exactly what develops.
Fishing Report
On the fishing front, there has been some action for yellowfin tuna along with the occasional sailfish. The water is still very warm, and we haven’t been seeing many dorado.
There have been an occasional few fish caught from the boats. As far as the beach fishing goes, I honestly don’t have a good report right now.
I just returned home after spending two weeks in the Idaho wilderness fly fishing for native Westslope cutthroat trout with my son. It was a great trip, but it means this week’s Baja report is based primarily on what I’ve heard from the captains I’ve spoken with since returning.
I’ve only been home for a couple of days, and most of that time has been spent getting things around the house and boats ready in case one of these storms comes our way.
Looking Ahead
I’ll be heading up to Magdalena Bay toward the end of October, and we still have a couple of openings available for anyone interested in joining us.
Once these storms move through, we should also have some very good fishing here in the Los Barriles/East Cape area. We still have openings for late October for anyone looking to get in some fall fishing.
We’re also now taking reservations for 2027 for both the East Cape and Magdalena Bay. If you’re thinking about fishing Baja with us next year, now is a good time to start putting dates together.
Stay safe to everyone here in Baja, especially our friends up around Magdalena Bay. We’ll keep watching the weather, and hopefully once these storms clear out, we’ll get right back to some great fall fishing.
