Baja Fly Fishing Report: Roosterfish Action, First Dorado, and Spring Weather Update – April 8, 2025

The past week has brought classic spring conditions to Baja. Daytime highs are hovering in the low 80s, and nighttime lows are comfortably in the low 70s—right on target for this time of year. One unique feature of the past several mornings has been the heavy fog, caused by the sharp contrast between cool ocean water and warming air temperatures. It’s made for some surreal, misty starts to the day on the water, but things are clearing quickly once the sun gets up.

As for the fishing—Spring is in the air, and the roosters are showing up. We’re seeing good numbers of small to medium-sized roosterfish, with a few larger fish mixed in. They’re active and moving, giving anglers plenty of chances inshore and just outside.

We’ve also spotted the first couple dorado of the season, which is always a welcome sign of warming water and the shift toward summer patterns.

Offshore, around 15 to 20 miles in front of Cabo Pulmo, there’s been a developing billfish bite. It’s still early, but the signs are encouraging for those looking to chase bigger game.

Inshore bait has been solid, with sardines making up the bulk of the activity. To the north, from Boca de Alamo to Bahia de los Muertos, we’re finding good numbers of jacks and roosters pushing through, offering great action for those willing to explore a bit farther.

Along the beaches, there are a few cruising fish, but most of the roosters and jacks are staying out in deeper water for now. Mullet are sparse, but we’re starting to see the first signs of them trickling in.

Things are lining up nicely for a strong spring season. The fish are here, the bait is showing, and the water is waking up—just the way we like it.
