“Baja Fly Fishing Update: Reeling in the Rooster fish”

Baja Fly Fishing Report – March 18, 2024

Location: Baja Mexico

Conditions:
Despite windy conditions prevailing along both the Pacific and East Cape sides of Baja, my anglers and I found a haven of calm in San Jose. The weather in San Jose started cool in the mornings, but steadily warmed up to very comfortable temperatures. Highs ranged from the delightful high 70’s to low 80’s, offering ideal conditions for fly fishing.

My anglers were rewarded with exciting catches, including the prized roosterfish and Sierra mackerel. The waters off San Jose proved to be productive grounds this past week, providing ample opportunities for great battles with these sought-after species. The roosterfish, known for its impressive size and spirited fight, offered my anglers memorable encounters this past week as the fish were very healthy and strong. the rooster fish were all between five and ten pounds although we did see a few bigger ones mixed in. Additionally, the Sierra mackerel added to the excitement, showcasing their agility and speed, making for an unforgettable fishing experience. They were on the larger side and peeling backing off the reel multiple times.

As I write this report the wind is whipping here in the East Cape. The forecast is for the wind to drop starting mid week so hopefully the boats can get out and chase the dorado and yellowtail that have been in the area. I will be returning to San Jose and Cabo this week to see if we can’t find more rooster fish action along with a few other species.

Stay tuned for more updates and tight lines!
