Spring is definitely in the air here in Baja, and the fly fishing has been solid this week. The weather has been about as nice as it gets—warm days, good light, and overall just a great time to be on the water.
Inshore fly fishing in Baja has been producing some solid action with a few slower days mixed in. Roosterfish have been the highlight, with some really good shots at larger fish along with steady action from small to medium roosters most days. It hasn’t been wide open, but when things line up, it’s been really good.
We’re also still seeing plenty of jacks around, along with a few areas holding red snapper. There’s a lot of bait in the area right now, which is a good sign, but it’s also brought in a ton of birds—and honestly, they’ve been more of a nuisance than anything. The pelicans have been all over us, diving on flies and getting into everything. When we’re chumming, they’re right behind the boat, and we’ve even had a few get hooked up, which is never fun. We’ve even had cormorants in the mix, so between all of them, it’s been a bit of a battle out there at times.
We do have a little wind starting today that looks like it’ll stick around for the next few days. We thought we were done with the north winds, but they’re giving us one more push. It might make things a little uncomfortable at times, but as always, if we can get out, we will.
A little further offshore, Baja fishing is starting to see more dorado showing up in our waters. Most of these fish have been in that 20–40 pound range, and while it’s not wide open by any means, the numbers are improving day by day. There are also still some tuna around, mainly with porpoise schools. We had a quick window of tuna action off Cerralvo on one of the banks, but it only lasted a couple days before it disappeared. We’ll keep an eye on that as things continue to shift.
For those fishing conventional gear, the pompano bite has been really good as well.
All in all, things are trending in the right direction as we move deeper into spring and it feels like things are starting to build.
