We had a bit of everything this week. The first major hurricane of the season passed well offshore, and thankfully it never caused us any real problems. We ended up with quite a bit of cloud cover, some humidity, and scattered rain showers, but nothing that kept us from fishing.
The offshore bite has been solid. We’ve been finding good numbers of tuna, and there have been opportunities at billfish as well. Overall, if you’ve been heading offshore, there’s been plenty to keep things interesting.
The beach fishing for roosterfish, on the other hand, slowed down this week. I think the lack of sunshine had a lot to do with it. Roosterfish love those bright, sunny mornings, and with all the clouds around they just weren’t showing themselves like they normally do. Even on the days when the sun finally came out, we saw some fish, but not nearly the numbers we’ve been seeing lately. We did pick up a few roosterfish from the boats, but overall it was just a slower week along the beaches.
This is hurricane season, so we’ll keep an eye on anything that starts developing out in the Pacific. That’s just part of living and fishing down here this time of year.
It’s definitely been hot and humid, so we’re looking forward to a little change of scenery. In September we’ll be heading back to the States for a couple of weeks to chase some trout before coming home and getting ready for another great season in Magdalena Bay.
