East Cape Fly Fishing Report – Roosters Up and Down the Coast

East Cape Fly Fishing Report – Los Barriles

We had some beautiful weather last week here on the East Cape and the fishing definitely matched it. Roosterfish were up and down the coastline and we were also seeing some nice dorado and jacks offshore. It was one of those weeks where everything seemed to line up.

Mid-week we did get three days of wind that slowed things down a bit, but as of today the wind has settled and it’s absolutely gorgeous out there again. Classic East Cape conditions before the wind — calm water, warm sun, and fish around.

Roosterfish have been the main story along the beaches and the rocky points. We’re seeing them cruising the shoreline and they’ve been very receptive to both flies and gear. Anglers fishing from the beach are also getting shots at roosters along with schools of jacks moving through.

Offshore we’re seeing good numbers of tuna, both with porpoise and breezing on the surface. Guys are getting them on topwater plugs and poppers, which always makes for some exciting fishing. Dorado have been mixed in as well.

The weather right now feels like spring is either here or right around the corner. Daytime highs have been in the low 80s and overnight temps in the mid-60s — about as nice as it gets.

All of this action has been right here at home along the East Cape around Los Barriles. I haven’t even needed to run over toward the Cabo side because the fishing has been so good here.

I know there’s a lot of turmoil and uncertainty in other parts of the world right now, but down here in Southern Baja it’s business as usual. Life is calm, the weather is beautiful, the fishing is great, and everything here continues to run just like it always has. Anyone thinking about coming down should have absolutely no hesitation — it’s a wonderful place to be right now.

With the wind settling down, the forecast for the coming week looks excellent and conditions should line up really well for more great fishing.

We’re still taking reservations for trips here in Los Barriles and the East Cape, as well as Magdalena Bay for our fall offshore marlin season. If you’ve been thinking about coming down, now is a great time to start planning.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the water.
