Fishing Stays Strong Between Storms: East Cape & Magdalena Bay Baja Report

Date: Week of October 10, 2025

Despite recent hurricanes and tropical storms, fishing remains strong in Baja California Sur. Tuna, dorado, and marlin are biting around the East Cape and Magdalena Bay as the fall season kicks off.

Weather & Conditions

It’s been a quiet week on the East Cape as Hurricane Priscilla passed through, bringing heavy rain, scattered showers, and rough seas. The port at Los Barriles was closed for a couple of days due to the conditions.

As of now, the port is open, though we’re closely watching Tropical Storm Raymond, which is forecasted to move into the region this Saturday. Expect more wind and rain, and another possible temporary port closure.

Fishing Conditions Prior to the Storm

Before Priscilla arrived, tuna fishing remained steady and productive, with a few dorado mixed in. Water temperatures are still in the upper 80s°F, keeping pelagic species active and conditions favorable for when the seas calm down again.

Once the weather settles, anglers should expect the bite to bounce back quickly — typical for this time of year when warm water and bait remain abundant.

Magdalena Bay Report

The Magdalena Bay season is officially underway, and early signs indicate a great year ahead.

  • To the south, anglers are seeing good numbers of marlin, along with dorado and tuna.
  • Up north, around Lopez Mateos, it’s been mostly tuna and dorado, with the occasional marlin making an appearance. The main concentrations of marlin are still further south, which is typical early in the season.

In the mangroves of Magdalena Bay, the inshore bite remains excellent, producing grouper, snook, orange corvina, and a variety of other resident species.

Overall, the Mag Bay season is off to a strong start, and conditions suggest we’re in for an exceptional year both offshore and inshore.

Personal Note

I’m currently in the United States visiting family, but I’ll be back in Baja within the next week or so. Once home, we’ll be heading out to officially kick off our Magdalena Bay season. I’m looking forward to being back on the water and sharing fresh reports and photos soon.
