“From calm seas to blustery winds: Fishing conditions shift mid week”

This past week we saw a shift in the wind conditions mid week. We all thought that the dreaded El Norte winds were possible over for the season. Unfortunately we were wrong. We began last week with calm winds and seas that were very fishable allowing anglers to get out on the water. By Thursday of last week the El Norte winds were back. They were forceful enough that the port captain had to close the port. This meant no boats were allowed to go out while the port was closed. The port is currently open but the winds have not let up. As I write this report they continue to blow here in the East Cape.

First rooster fish of the day

Before the winds forced us off the water we were seeing some very good fishing for dorado and rooster fish. The fishing to the North near Isla Cerravlo was very productive for dorado and rooster fish by chumming with live sardines and getting them around the boat allowing the anglers a chance to cast there flies to the fish swimming around the boat. The dorado on average were between eight and fifteen pounds with a few bigger fish caught. The rooster fish were of good size with some pushing twenty five pounds but most were between five and fifteen pounds.

A prize first catch

While the Sea of Cortez experienced windy conditions, San Jose del Cabo remained relatively calm, providing ideal fishing conditions. Cool mornings warming up to perfect day time highs in the upper 70’s contributed to a pleasant angling experience. Venturing out of San Jose del Cabo we had successful outings with multiple catches of various species such as Dorado, Rooster fish, Sierra, and Jacks. The absence of wind allowed for productive fishing.

Dad and daughter double up

We will be on the water this week. Where we will be fishing remains to be seen. If the winds stop and we are able to get out here at home in the East Cape then that is where we will be. If they continue to blow we will be heading toward what ever protected waters that may offer us a reprieve form the adverse conditions. What ever the scenario we will be on the water chasing fish. Until next time we wish everyone great fishing.
