Marlin and dorado still biting

We continue to see good fishing for Dorado and Marlin here in the East Cape. It’s surprising that in mid January we still are experiencing this kind of action.  We have seen a slight decline in the dorado numbers this week but the marlin numbers remain fair.  We have a good number of small skip jack in the area and that’s what’s keeping the larger dorado and marlin in the area. The boats that are going out are averaging two to five marlin with some dorado mixed in.

We did see some wind last week keeping anglers on the sidelines and the kite boarders happy.   As we look at the forecast for this up coming week it shows we will have a few days where the winds are down and we will be able to get out. Let’s hope the fishing continues to be good.

I was out yesterday fishing the beach and experienced action very early in the morning. We arrived at sunrise and not long after we started to see activity. There were small rooster fish and a few sierra chasing small bait fish. The bait is very small but there is plenty of it. Blind casting into the activity produced a hookup for my guest but the fish unfortunately came unbuttoned leaving us wondering what type of fish he had hooked.

As the day went on and the sun moved higher in the sky the action slowed. We looked at a few more beaches the rest of the day and saw more of the small bait on all of them. During the exploration of the beaches the only activity we had was one rooster follow the teaser. The mornings seem to be providing the best action if you’re looking to fish the beach.

Over on the pacific side we continue to see good action for dorado and tuna on the Inman bank. I had a great day with my guests there last week. We picked up sardines at Palmilla and then headed South to the bank. After chumming a few handfuls of sardines, our first Dorado showed up behind the boat.  We were able to land that one as well as a few others. After a few more boats arrived and there was more chum in the water the yellow fin tuna decided to play. We hooked two very nice fish and lost another.

I will be fishing both the East Cape as well as out of Cabo this week. As good as the fishing has been I’m sure we will find something. We will be sure to report here what we discover. Until then we wish everyone good fishing.
