Southern Baja Fishing Report – Mid July | East Cape Roosterfish, Tuna, Marlin & Magdalena Bay Fly Fishing

Fishing across Southern Baja continues to be good overall as we move through the middle of July.
The beach roosterfish action has slowed slightly compared to a week and a half ago. There are still quality fish being caught, but not in the numbers we were seeing recently. That’s very normal for this fishery, and we’re confident the bite will rebound as conditions continue to develop through the summer.
Offshore, the tuna fishing remains excellent. Most of the action is taking place 20–30 miles offshore, where anglers are finding very good-quality fish. The majority of these tuna are 70 pounds and larger, making them a bit oversized for most fly tackle. That said, if someone wants to take on the challenge with a fly rod, we’re always happy to give it a try.

Dorado are scattered throughout the offshore waters, although there aren’t any large schools to report at the time of this update. The best opportunities continue to come during the morning hours.
We’ve also been finding roosterfish from the boat. They have become a little more selective lately, often choosing between the live bait and the fly, which can make them challenging. Even so, we’re fooling a few each trip and enjoying some exciting opportunities.

The marlin fishing has been consistently good. Most boats specifically targeting marlin are finding a few fish each day. If catching a marlin on the East Cape is on your bucket list, now is an excellent time to make it happen.
If marlin is your primary goal, however, I highly recommend joining me in Magdalena Bay. It’s one of the world’s premier marlin fisheries and offers far more than just incredible offshore action. Along with opportunities for striped marlin, dorado, and tuna, the mangrove system is home to an amazing variety of species including snook, cubera snapper, leopard grouper, orange-mouthed corvina, golden trevally, and many others. The combination of offshore and inshore fly fishing makes Magdalena Bay one of the most unique fisheries anywhere in Baja.

The weather continues to be hot, but we’ve seen very little rain and no significant tropical activity so far. As we move deeper into the summer, we’ll be keeping a close eye on tropical moisture and any storms that develop during hurricane season.
