Southern Baja Fly Fishing Report – Roosters, DORADO, Tuna, and Magdalena Bay is heating up

Southern Baja Fly Fishing Report

The fly fishing in Southern Baja has been lively this past week with plenty of action both inshore and offshore.

Inshore Action

Small to medium roosterfish have been keeping anglers busy from the boats, providing steady excitement. Dorado are showing up in good numbers, with solid fish in the 8–30 pound range hitting hard and keeping rods bent.

Offshore Bite

The tuna bite has been fairly consistent, with three or four different porpoise schools holding fish. The average tuna is running about 20 pounds, making for great fun on the fly. In addition, there are some sailfish in the area, along with the occasional blue marlin. Most of the striped marlin have moved on as water temperatures are too warm, though the occasional striper is still around.

Weather Outlook

Conditions have been hot and humid with daytime highs in the mid to upper 90s and overnight lows in the mid 70s. A tropical system is moving in midweek that should deliver several days of much-needed rain—likely 3 to 5 days starting Wednesday.

Magdalena Bay

The fly fishing season has kicked off in Magdalena Bay. Offshore, there have been good numbers of tuna and a few DORADO, though the marlin haven’t shown just yet—any day now. Inside the mangroves, anglers are finding strong action on grouper, leopard grouper, orange mouth corvina, and more.

A Note from the Water

I’ll be heading to the mountains for a couple of weeks to chase trout, so there won’t be a new report until I return. Expect updates to resume once I’m back on the water here in Baja.

until then we wish everyone great fishing!
