Southern Baja Fly Fishing Report: Slow Bites, But Incredible Whale Watching!

If you are planning a fly fishing trip to Southern Baja this February, be prepared for challenging conditions. The bite has been slow for most of the major gamefish such as jacks, roosterfish, marlin, tuna, and dorrado. As any seasoned angler knows, things can turn around at any moment.

Current Conditions

Sea of Cortez: The water is on the cool side with water temperatures around 68 degrees and slightly off-color, which has made the fishing inconsistent. There have been some windy days, further stirring things up and making things more difficult.

Pacific Side: Cooler green water has slowed fishing down, with fewer signs of bait and predators inshore. Offshore, marlin and dorado have been scarce, though some there are some fish in the area off Cabo.

Species Breakdown

Roosterfish & Jacks: Some smaller fish are still cruising the beaches, but bigger roosters have been elusive. There are still a few fish but most of the action has been for jacks a little further offshore. The best action along the beaches has been for Sierra Mackerel.

Dorado & Tuna: Both have been few and far between, with only scattered reports of dorado offshore and tuna are in some cases being found a long way offshore associated with purpose. The action has been very hit and miss.

Marlin: While a few boats have encountered them, marlin action has been spotty, and fly fishing opportunities have been nearly nonexistent.

The Silver Lining: Incredible Whale Watching!

While the fishing has been tough, the whale watching on the Pacific side has been spectacular. Humpback and gray whales are currently abundant off Cabo San Lucas, putting on incredible shows with breaching, tail slaps, and close encounters near the boats. The presence of these giants has made the slow fishing days more enjoyable, providing a reminder of the incredible marine life that makes Baja such a special destination.

Final Thoughts

Despite the slow fishing, this is Baja, and anything can happen. Keep an eye out for birds, bait balls, or unexpected surface action. sometimes, things can turn around quickly so you never know. We have lots of days that begin slow but end up with good action in the end.

Until next time we wish everyone great fishing!!
