Spring is here and so are the fish

Hi folks,

This past week we had lots of fun. We fished on both the Pacific side as well as the Sea of Cortez. Spring is here and so are the fish.

Our weather this past week was very spring like for Souther Baja most of the week. We saw day time temperatures in the high eighties with overnight lows in the high fifties to low sixties. The nights and early morning hours are still quite cool with a normal breeze coming from the west so a jacket is still helpful for the first hour or so when traveling in the boat.  As the week ended we saw some heavy winds in the East Cape. These winds were strong enough to close the port not allowing boats to fish on Friday and Saturday. The port opened back up on Sunday with yellow flag conditions. As I write this report it is still quite windy and the port is open but still under yellow flag conditions. The seas are pretty rough but it’s forecast to settle down and become quite nice on Wednesday.

In the East Cape we continue to see catches of yellowtail, skipjack, and roosters, along with a few dorado and marlin. We fished mainly to the North early in the week with good success. We caught some great skipjack and lost a couple yellowtail. We also managed to find a few roosters in the East Cape.  They were scattered from Palmas bay to the light house.  We found them a little further out in the deeper water. Pretty soon we will start seeing better numbers and more action for them along the beach.

Over on the Pacific side we had very good action for roosters and dorado. We found decent action for roosters out of Cabo.  We fished around the lighthouse working back to the South towards sunset beach. We didn’t catch dorado in this area but saw a few a little further out chasing schools of ballyhoo.

The wind on the Pacific side one day caused us to go to the South and the area of San Jose. We found some great Sierra fishing in the area of the Westin hotel down to Palmilla. A little further South we found roosters and a couple dorado that were chasing small bait. We were able to catch a couple of those dorado. This is the first year on a long time I have seen the dorado this constant during the winter and spring months.

It’s going to a tough week as the winds are forecast to be fairly strong until mid to late week. I will not be on the water this week as we have to go to Guadalajara this week to renew my sons American passport as that is now our closest American consulate. While we are there we are going to take a few extra days and enjoy this great city. We will be back on the water guiding guests the first week in April. I will be sure to let everyone know the latest conditions when we get back on the water. Until then I wish  everyone great fishing.
