Spring is here and the action is heating up. We have seen good action this past week for Tuna, Dorado, and Roosters.

We began our week with some strong winds in the East Cape forcing us to fish out of San Jose early in the week. We had some tough fishing. The fish were there but not all that willing to bite. We hooked two Dorado but unfortunately both of them came unbuttoned. We saw some very nice Rooster fish but they would chase the fly but at the last moment decide it wasn’t for them. They are a very wise and tough fish to catch at times. But it was fun getting them to chase even though very few were willing to bite.

By mid week the winds had dropped and we were back in the East Cape. We had our first Tuna of the season show up in the East Cape this past week. They were mixed in with some Skip Jacks just North of town in an area known as the slides. Most of the boats that were catching them were using chunk squid. A few people ran thirty miles to the North to get sardines. The boats that had sardines were chumming the waters and getting the fish boiling around the boat. If you were lucky enough to catch a tuna they were of nice size all between fourth and eighty pounds. The problem was there were so many small Skip Jack having your bait be found by a Tuna before a Skip Jack was a challenge.

We also encountered good fly fishing for Rooster fish this past week. We found Rooster Fish up near the island of Cerralvo as well as in the Canyon. We also found good fly fishing for Rooster fish in the area of La Ribera.

Each day as we were fly fishing for Rooster fish we had dorado around the boat as well. We are currently seeing a fair number of Dorado inshore as they are chasing the small ballyhoo that are starting to appear. It’s very exciting when you have both Rooster fish and Dorado fighting over your fly.

Spring is here and the fishing is getting pretty good with more fish showing up each day. The forecast for this week shows heavy winds once again through about mid week. We will have to see if the good fishing continues once the winds subside. I’ll be on the water starting mid week and through the weekend so be sure to check back and see if the chance to get a spring slam continues.
