The new year starts with good fishing in Baja

Hello everyone,

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is enjoying the new year. The new year starts with good fishing in Baja.

We spent New Year’s Day on the water. We fished out of our home base in Los Barriles. I spent the day with my son and my good friend who is visiting. The goal was to catch my son Kevin his first marlin. There continues to be good fishing for dorado as well as marlin in Los Barriles.

We headed out early at gray light and run down to the area of the banks in front of La Ribera. As the sun crested over the horizon it was easy to see the small skip jack feeding. We caught a few skip jack on very small flies. The plan was to slow troll a couple of skip jack for the large dorado and marlin that have been in the area.

As we put our skip jacks in the water we heard a couple boats on the radio discussing the action they had the day before. The conditions were favorable for action as there was plenty of bait in the area and the seas were calm.

It was not long before one of the rods began to scream. A very good sized dorado was peeling line and dancing across the water. It was a good start to the day.

This action continued for quite some time. We had very good dorado action as well as all the boats in the area. Everyone seemed to be hooking up on dorado and all of them were very good size.

As we were landing our final dorado we saw two tailing marlin swim past the boat. It was time to put in the marlin lures.

We were trolling lures for about fifteen minutes when the first stripe marlin appeared behind the lure. The fish ate the lure and Kevin was hooked up to his first marlin.

After a fight of about forty five minutes Kevin had landed his first marlin ever. He was over the moon. It was great to be able to share this memory with him. After a quick photo the fish was released leaving an ever lasting smile on one very happy eleven year old boy.

Next it was time to see if we could get my good friend Garrett one on the fly. We pulled the hooks out of the teasers and got the fly rod ready. It was not long and we had another fish come into the spread. I teased the fish to the back of the boat. As the boat slid into neutral Garrett made a perfect presentation and we had a New Year’s Day marlin on the fly. Unfortunately that fish came unbuttoned along with two others we raised and hooked on the fly. This New Year’s Day.

Besides the action for dorado and marlin in Los Barriles the fishing out of Cabo San Lucas has also been good. Three has been good action for tuna as well as some dorado and the marlin bite is picking up.

We hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start. We wish everyone great fishing this upcoming year. Our season is underway. So if you’re looking to fish Baja in 2024 give us a call as we are happy to show you some of the great fishing Baja has to offer.
