The Reel Baja Fishing Report – Week of April 27 to May 2, 2025

Epic Fly Action for Roosters and Variety Offshore Opportunities! And the season is just beginning!

This past week delivered some incredible fly fishing action, especially for small to medium roosterfish. That said, roosterfish are never easy—they’re a challenging species to consistently fool on the fly. Each day has brought something a little different. Some days we’re finding fish readily, while other days they’ve been more elusive. Even when we’re on them, they remain tough adversaries, but with persistence and skill, we’ve had great success hooking both the smaller schoolies and some impressive larger roosters.

Offshore, yellowfin tuna have been cooperative, though they’re holding farther out—about 35 to 40 miles. For those willing to make the run, the payoff has been solid. Marlin have also been active off Punta Pescadero, roughly 12 to 16 miles out. While the bite has been a bit hit or miss, when the marlin decide to play, they’ve been incredibly aggressive.

Closer to shore, the beach action is heating up. We’re seeing small, medium, and even a few large roosters cruising the surf zone, hunting bait. It’s a prime time for sight fishing and casting to fish along the beaches. Jack crevalle are also in the area, providing anglers with powerful fights. For those seeking nonstop rod-bending action, big skipjack tuna have been plentiful and offering some great sport.

Weather-wise, conditions have been generally pleasant with daytime temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 80s. We’ve had occasional cloud cover and a bit of wind, but overall, it’s been a fantastic week to be on the water.
